Leanna Schafer is a Salem, MA based artist and is a recent graduate of Salem State University with a degree in Art History, focusing on Renaissance paintings.
Leanna draws inspiration from her personal experiences and observations as a woman, from the beauty and workings of nature, and from personal events in her life. She enjoys painting and collage and is fascinated with the history of the development of art.
The piece dedicated to Mary Magdalene was created by combining the original story of Mary Magdalene with the perception many men have of women today. Just as Mary had been traditionally painted as a prostitute by the Catholic Church, women today can be subjected to negative remarks if they do not follow the status quo placed together by male expectations of femininity.
